Exploring the Schuylkill: Eels, Mussels & River Life

Freshwater Ecology Educational Trip

Exploring the Schuylkill, Guided Paddle

Discover the Schuylkill River like never before with Take It Outdoors and aquatic biologist Dr. Erik Silldorff. This immersive day trip blends adventure and science as you paddle along the river and uncover the hidden world beneath its surface.

Along the way, you’ll get hands-on experience exploring native mussels, elusive eels, crayfish, and the broader ecology that keeps this river alive. More than just a paddle, this is an interactive “crash course” in freshwater biology—perfect for curious minds who want to go beyond the basics.
You’ll have the chance to actively participate in mussel surveys, learn how scientists study and protect aquatic ecosystems, and gain a deeper understanding of the Schuylkill’s history and its transformation over time. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, science lover, or just looking for a unique way to spend a day on the water, this experience offers a rare opportunity to connect with the river in a meaningful way.
