Clinics & Lessons
Strokes and Technique
May 16th
Did you know there is more to kayaking than just paddling forward? There are a wide array of kayak strokes and techniques that help paddlers be in control of their boat. From sweeps to draws, being in control of your kayak helps you advance in your kayaking and it all starts with the fundamentals. Join us this evening as we review the basics, learn more advanced techniques and have fun paddling on the water. This class is the first step in TIO’s teaching/coaching for kayaking and leads to more advanced paddling classes like skirt clinics, moving water skills classes, self-rescue and much more.
Where:
Take it Outdoors
We will paddle on the flatwater on the Schuylkill in front of TIO’s rec hub.
Who is this class for?
Beginners and experts alike will gain something from this class.
What’s it like?
TIO uses principles of the American Canoe Assoication to teach. We prefer to demonstrate a skill, teach the skill, then allow participants to put it into practice and coach them along the way.
Moving Water Skills Class
July 2025
Rivers are fun to paddle. The current can make a long day on the water easy, or it can make it very tiring. Proper form and technique can help you enjoy the most a river has to offer. From riding the current to relaxing in an eddy, proper skills and knowledge can make your day on the water safer and more enjoyable.
We will spend the first half of the class with some discussion and basics on land, then we will get on the water to review strokes and techniques. For the second half of the class, we will paddle up to a moving water feature and learn about spawning, reverse ferrying, ferrying, eddying out, and other moving water skills.
This class is intended for the beginner paddler ready to get out on moving water. You should have paddled a handful of times before, however, anyone who is interested in learning new skills or honing existing ones, is welcome to attend. Space will be limited. If you are unsure if you are up for it, please reach out with any questions. Our instructors are certified Level 2 & Level 3 River Kayaking Instructors who love kayaking and love seeing others gain skills to take their kayaking to the next level of enjoyment.
