Ride The Old Turnpike Tunnels
August 12 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm UTC-5
Join Take It Outdoors Adventures as we explore America’s only abandoned superhighway turned bike trail. A section of America’s first long-distance, limited access highway was taken out of service in 1968 when the turnpike diverted over and around the mountains instead of through them. The old road ride has 2 dark, damp, and abandoned tunnels along 9 miles of history reverting to nature. There are some gentle climbs and descents. The tunnels are dark (in the longer tunnel, neither end is visible from the center) and offer not only a unique chilling sensory experience but also a cold respite from the heat and exertion outside.
We will meet at TIOA Headquarters at 930am, travel by van to the “Abandoned Turnpike” (approx 2.5 hours), pedal end to end and back, then stop for beverage and food on the way home, returning to TIOA around 7-8pm.
Cost: $50 includes: Round Trip transportation for you and your bike, 18 miles of gentle riding, 2 Tunnels, all abandoned turnpike tolls, guides skilled in minor repairs for you and your bike. Yes, it’s a long drive and a short bike, but it’s a unique experience and comes complete with all the TIOA jocundity you’ve come to expect.
A Bike (hybrid or mountain. Although it’s a mostly paved route, some of the pavement is deteriorating and is not ideal for a road bike (doable, but not encouraged).
Bike Light (some kind of light mounted to your bike for inside the tunnels)
Bike clothing + change of clothes for return trip and dinner.
Water (bike mounted or in a small pack,- aside from the tunnels, we’ll be out in full sun most of the ride).
Spare tube or patch kit for your bike.
PS: We will not abandon you on the abandoned turnpike. This is not a race, this is a group ride at a pace that’s suitable for all.
